One of most unique nocturnal delights Denver’s summer provides is the outdoor movie series, Film on the Rocks. 2015 marks its 16th year and this year’s lineup is a great one! For the uninitiated, you may ask, what is so special about seeing a movie that you can watch in the comfort of your home for a fraction of the price? Three reasons jump to my mind:
Location, Location, Location– Red Rocks- This geological amphitheater was formed by Mother Nature herself 250 million years ago. Yes, way, way, way before Fred Flintstone was a twinkle in his mama’s eye. And you are guaranteed to have flashbacks of Bedrock as you drive and walk to the facility. Humans in the early half of the 1900’s honed the site into the perfection that you see and can be part of today. You will be cozily nestled between the two monoliths Ship Rock and Creation Rock- each taller than Niagara Falls! Seating faces eastward towards downtown Denver. If geological history doesn’t impress you, perhaps the bands that have performed will- from The Beatles to U2 to The String Cheese Theory- the facility has been host to more bands than are even in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The facility contains a free, indoor museum that is awe inspiring.
Price– Talk about bang for your buck. Tickets are $12 for General Admission ($42 for VIP Peak Experience package.) For a mere dozen dollars, one can be entertained by a comedian, rock out to live music, be surrounded by other cool, outdoorsy people and watch a classic movie in possibly the world’s greatest outdoor theater. Doors open at 6:30, bands start at 7:00 and the movie gets fired up at dusk
